Basel Institute on Governance

The Basel Institute on Governance is an organization aiming to provide guidance for good governance and countering corruption. It was established in 2003 with a seat in Basel operating around the world. It is a non-profit organization cooperating with the University of Basel. The organization, together with its partners in public and private sector focuses on five main areas:

1) Asset recovery – aims to provide direct support on major corruption and asset recovery cases, build long-term capacity for financial investigations and asset recovery, help partners develop and apply powerful tools, strengthen leadership and foster cooperation.
2) Private sector – aims to help organizations to enhance their anti-corruption compliance programs and organisational governance and address corruption challenges
3) Green Corruption – aims to secure supply chains for minerals, build robust internal controls, bring environmental criminals to justice, enhance corruption safeguards and convene practitioners in the green corruption space from around the world to learn from each other and bolster each other’s efforts
4) Prevention, Research and Innovation – aims to research anti-corruption practices and provide technical assistance to donors and practitioners to design and implement anti-corruption strategies and interventions
5) Public Finance Management – aims to help public institutions manage resources transparently and effectively

The organization publishes several reports and documents, the most important from AML perspective being the Basel AML Index.
